A Room Coming Together Comes Undone!

I've made some progress this year with our Master Bedroom! That's saying a lot considering in my 10+ years of marriage that has always been the last room to get decorating attention - no one really saw it but us so why put too much time and effort into it!

My focus has changed though because I grew tired of walking into a plain and boring room with its hodgepodge of mismatched accessories. I wanted gorgeous bedding and throw pillows......even if they did get thrown to the ground at the end of the day I wanted to say that yes, I did make the bed today and it made me feel good, darn it! What is it about a made bed?!? (I think I'll save that discussion for later)

So I dedicated myself to spending time on a space that doesn't get a lot of eye traffic. (I just made that up)
I knew that even if no one saw a pretty room with a made bed that day but me and my family that was good enough. Our homes are for us to enjoy, right?!?

Anyhow, this room started coming together. Piece by piece I was making euro sham covers and then adding more throw pillows into the mix. I purchased a blank slate white duvet for the bed and actually started making my bed everyday!!

I madeover a beautiful hand-me-down antique frame for my bedside. You can read more about how I did it here.

I had a color palette I was abiding by: yellow, gray, a bit of aqua.  I sparay painted frames white and created a gallery wall......as well as some other visually interesting items that I'll write about later :)

So how did my room come undone you ask. The most gorgeous, perfect pair of lampshades that I had to have and purchased from Target disrupted my almost-done-and-feeling-pretty-good-about-it room!

You're probably wondering why I don't just return them or trade them out for something more neutral. You know when you find something that just, totally sounding like a home dork, but just speaks to you! These lampshades sure did......perfectly my style-drum shade-colors and everything! Problem is they don't match. I'm not normally a matchy-matchy decorator. I simply feel like the patterns are competing for attention......my gorgeous homemade ikat euro shams and the lattice pattern of the lampshade. And now feeling like the pale yellow pillows stand out like a sore thumb......or is it the mustard yellow of the shade?

(can you see my lovely dust marks?)

When you realize that the last perfect piece to your room doesn't work do you alter the room to compliment your new found decor item or just leave it how it was?

Have you ever lived this story in your own decorating adventures? How did you solve it? Please do share.....I could use some perspective :)

  1. I think all you need to do is paint the brown lamp white. The pillows and the lampshade do not have to match, they look great. Calm down and carry on Blessings Paula Lusk

  2. Gorgeous! I second what fixitfaerie said above: paint the lamp bases white, and I think you'll find those beautiful lamp shades are the perfect complements to the lovely ikat pillows :) Because the shades are a large geometric pattern in a single color, and the pillows are a more detailed pattern that "reads" more subtle (at least in the pictures), I think they work together instead of competing. Hope this helps your decorating anxiety! ;) Just live with it for a bit, and I think you'll find it's just right... And if not, you can always change it! :)

  6. They didn't strike me as being wrong for the room at all! I think it looks great - I like a bit more of an eclectic/collected over time look than matchy matchy. Live with them for a while and I'll bet you'll love it. Or if it still bugs you bring in a couple of other accents in the deeper yellow shade in other parts of the room, like with a photo frame or flowers or something.

  7. No, I don't find the shades wrong at all! I find the patterns & shades of yellow to be more interesting because they don't exactly match. You don't want a bed-in-a-bag look!

I find if you love something it will all "go", whether or not it "matches".

I can see the lamp bases as white, but they don't bother me as is either. I like contrasts.

  8. What if you put something made of leather on the lampshades?
Fringe, braid, or a cut out shape?

  9. I love it! I am redoing my bedroom and just cant get it right! However, you needed a "pop" factor in the room and those shades do it perfectly! as previously noted above, I agree, just add one or two other almost as bright yellow pieces in the room--maybe yellow and white striped curtains/fabric to soften the shutters (similar to your living room would look fab! dontchyathink? :) have fun!

  10. your room is geogeous! I agree that paining the bases of the lamps would make a huge difference. Also, if you could remove the tacks around the headboard and put a grey fabric over the leather, it would make the room look much more feminine and dainty. :) Good job! :)
