Inspiration: How to create Statement Shelving

I toured my home and found over 10 free standing (not in a bookcase or wall unit) shelves!! I love shelves.......they are a great way to add visual interest to a wall while keeping the collection contained and succinct. I think I have some sort of shelf in every room in my house :)

Creating Statement Shelves:

Keeping in mind the theme of your collection will help when displaying your lovelies. For instance, you wouldn't display your craft items with your collection of vintage cars. You can display with a color palette in mind or keep it a bit random with one element tying it all together.

I love how Desiree of The 36th Avenue has used red and green with sprinkles of aqua to arrange her craft goodies here:

You might also consider the visual weight of your items when displaying them. See how the shelving above doesn't cram too many large scale items on one shelf. The breadbox which is visually heavy is paired with two small plates and a muffin tin. The red polka-dotted box below (visually heavy) is paired with clear (visually light) mason jars. Does that all make sense?!? Hopefully so :)

It really is all about balance when deciding where and how to display your collection.

I have this gigantic shelf I scored on Ebay a few years back that has been sitting in my office for over a year waiting for me to find just the right piece of inspiration to give it a complete makeover! It started out black......

and after browsing Pinterest for months and finding these beauties.....

it became this.......

The theme here was all white with just a little greenery (if you can't already tell:) Also, see how each end has visually heavy items to 'balance' the collection. Here are a few more 'statement shelves' in my home:

Guess what the theme is in my daughters room?? Lol :) I think I bought a can of pink paint when I found out I was pregnant with her! Now I'm ready for a change from all of the pink but I still love her shelving. I wanted it very feminine so I added the crystal embellishments and of course, PINK!

The shelves don't even have to be big to make a statement. Here is a small scale shelf that still makes an impact because of the chosen collection or theme.

I hope you found some inspiration to create a statement in your home with shelving!

Make it a beautiful day!
