A Pretty Pair and Creative Seating

I am always on the lookout for creative seating! Whenever we have a large group at our home I feel like there just isn't enough places for people to sit. I love getting creative with benches, ottomans and even storage cubes! :) When I spotted these folding chairs at the thrift store for $6 a piece I knew they were meant for me.......they just needed a serious makeover!
Here is my pretty pair of folding chairs all dolled up:

and here is the before:

Pretty gross, right?!? My boys were selling lemonade and grabbed these chairs from the garage.....I was so embarrased that they were using them like this! I know I'm weird! :)
Here is what I mean by being creative with your seating.......
For most of us, it isn't in the budget or spatially possible to have couches everywhere. We have to make use with what we have. By being creative and thinking outside the box a bit I've added to our seating options.
For instance, by covering this coffee table with fabric to use as a bench it works as extra seating when we need it and also works in my everyday decor.

My new folding chairs aren't taking up much room and can be stored away when we don't need them! I also decided to cover them in an outdoor fabric so they can be used indoors or out and can easily be cleaned....always a bonus!

I've already used them outside on my front porch to decorate for Fall! You can read more about that HERE.

So, how do you get creative with your seating?

Blueberry Salsa Spinach Salad

I love Fall for many reasons but one of them has to be berry season!! I love fresh berries in smoothies, on cereal and in yogurt! This 'Blueberry Salsa Spinach Salad' is perfect for using fresh blueberries.....don't you LOVE the color they add?!?

I shared with you my favorite go-to cookie HERE so this has to be my favorite go-to salad! I get SO many compliments when I bring this salad to parties or get-togethers and everyone wants the recipe!
Just cause I'm sweet I'll give it to ya too! :)

Blueberry Salsa Spinach Salad

1 large fresh orange
2 cups fresh blueberries (I also added in a handful of fresh raspberries)
2 apples, diced
1/2 cup chopped red onion
2 T. chopped cilantro
1/3 cup red wine vinegar
3 T. apple juice
2 T. extra virgin olive oil
2 T. sugar
1/4 tsp. salt
10 oz. baby spinach
4 oz. crumbled Gorgonzola cheese

Peel and section orange, then cut into small pieces; place in large bowl. Stir in blueberries, apples, onion and cilantro. In small bowl, whisk vinegar, apple juice, oil, sugar and salt. Pour 1/2 dressing over blueberry mixture, stirring gently to coat; let stand 10 minutes. Arrange baby spinach on plates. Spoon blueberry mixture over spinach. Drizzle reamaining dressing over salads. Top with cheese and black pepper. Enjoy!!

How do you use fresh berries?

Halloween Mantel + A Mini Tutorial

I'm going backwards (in decorating for Fall) I know!! I showed you my Fall front porch HERE
and now I'm inside decorating for Halloween!

I'm weird in that I don't like gorry, scary or gruesome Halloween decor at all......I'm much better with the fun, cutesy and safe Halloween decorations :)

A few weeks ago I created my 'BOO' Boa Halloween Garland and knew I wanted to use it in my Halloween mantel! I also have a super quick and easy tutorial for transforming regular art into holiday themed decor!

So, here we go.......first up here is my newly done Halloween mantel:

I told you I like cutesy!! LOL! The wreath was just black when I purchased it and I added the ribbon and ornaments. I just LOVE these little pumpkins I found at Walmart for $0.99 each! I've used them in my Fall tablescape and in my Fall front porch!

See the black and white artwork in the center of my display? Here is how they started.......

I'd thought about getting rid of them so many times but I'm so glad that I hung onto them! Don't you love when you can re-purpose an unused item and not have to spend any money?!?

I used Mod-Podge, paintbrush and glitter to add some sparkle to these prints!

And here they are ready for Halloween!

Have you started decorating for Halloween yet?

Fall Party

Front Porch Fall Decor

Here is just a sneak peek of the Fall decorating that is going on around my home! The front porch and entryway are my favorite parts to decorate because it really sets the tone for the rest of my house!

I am currently LOVING aqua in my Fall decorating so you know I just had to include some in my outdoor decor :)

The aqua 'tray' is perfect for holding my pumpkin collection along with a rustic 'Pumpkins' sign that I made. The blue chevron striped pillow and the plant stand is another way I tied it all together.

I just finished up the first of a pair of folding chairs I thrifted a while back and I thought why not use it to hold my Fall goodies. The fabric compliments the orange tones in my pumpkins and sign.

What Fall decorating have you done lately? What is your favorite area to decorate? I hope you enjoyed my Fall front porch and stay tuned for more Fall themed decor, crafts and ideas! :)

Distressed Yellow Dresser and How I Sand Furniture

I thought I would share with you today my distressed and roughed up yellow dresser in my master bedroom that I've given you sneak peeks of in my post about how to create gallery walls

and also shown you here in my nursery inspiration post.......

I love the very pale yellow.....it totally compliments our rooms color scheme and helps to calm down all of the dark elements we have in our room. The paint is from Sherwin-Williams and I cannot tell you what the exact color is - only that I color matched it to a paint swatch I had that I now cannot find :( What a crummy tutorial this is turning out to be, right? Anyhow, I will say that if you are painting furniture you'll want to use a Sherwin-Williams paint (or something comparable) namely, the Pro Classic line. It will save you many a headache :)

I purposely didn't prime this piece because I wanted as much original stain that I could get peeking out as possible. I applied two coats of paint and let it dry overnight.

Here is the FUN part:

My husband questioned me about distressing the dresser top the way I was going about doing it......let me first share a little secret with you......I LOVE to paint and stain but I HATE to sand!! Is anyone else with me?!? It's hard work!! Sooooo being the lazy sander that I am I opted to ditch my sanding pad and pulled out my palm sander!

I started with the idea that I would just lightly distress the edges but as I started working with my palm sander to smooth out the top of my dresser it began pulling paint off in sections and was really loving how rough it started looking with entire sections sanded down to the original stain! (There's also a huge section sanded down underneath my mirrored tray:)

I used the palm sander for the edges of the drawers and then had to get out a small piece of sandpaper to reach the corners and small spaces. I wanted my sander to touch every corner and edge of the dresser and I accomplished the sanding process much faster than if using a sanding pad!

This piece would have been beautiful left alone but sanding it the way I did added so much more character!! What do you think?

Finally, I used a clear coat of Fiddes & Sons wax to seal and protect.

The knobs are all from Hobby Lobby. I wanted the top drawer to have chunkier knobs to create visual interest. Try mixing and matching your hardware -  I think you'll love the result! Mix a funky pattern with a solid or a shiny gold with a muted pewter and you can even play with different sizes too!

As for the accessories, the candlestick and frame I've had forever. The bowl is from Tai Pan and the glass balls are from Michael's. The aqua artichoke is from Marshall's and the mirrored platter and white bowls are thrifted.

There you have it!! I hope you gleaned a bit of knowledge from my uncommon refinishing process :)

'BOO' Boa Halloween Garland

This happens to be one of my favorite crafts! I love Fall crafts, decor and activities so I thought I would share with you today one of my favorite decor items for Fall.......actually this one is for Halloween!

'BOO' Boa Halloween Garland

Here is what you'll need to make your own Halloween garland:
a black boa (mine came with the silver already in it)
black tulle
purple sparkly fabric (found at Joanne's)
3 different types of Halloween ribbon
cardstock in 3 different colors (black, purple, and orange - I found sparkled paper)
patterned Halloween paper
gluestick
hole punch
scissors
printable tags (you can find them here: http://party.catchmyparty.com/files/catchmyparty_halloween.pdf )

Start first by cutting your fabric and ribbon. I cut the purple fabric into 12" pieces, the tulle into 15" pieces and the ribbon into 14-15" pieces (3 of each ribbon)

Next we'll cut the paper. Cut out the printable tags and punch a hole at the top of each. Cut out the pennant flags for the lettering. Here is an easy way to get an even pennant. Using a ruler, start by drawing a line the length you would like your pennant and then a perpendicular line the width you'd like your pennant......then simply connect your lines......like this:

I topped each pennant with some patterned paper that matched my cardstock. I used gluesticks for adhesive.....easy peasy! :) I also used my Silhouette to cut out some tag shapes in the sparkled cardstock as well as the black letters. If you don't have a Silhouette you can find pre-cut letters at any craft store. Glue your letters on to the pennants.

Now we're going to start tying! I used the tag that came with the boa as a center point and starting tying the black tulle in equal increments. Next came the purple fabric strips.

Using the tag as the center point I tied my first 'O' on through holes punched in each corner. Tie the second 'O' and 'B' on equally spaced from the center. Punch a second set of holes in your patterned paper, thread your black tulle through them and tie into a knot.

Then you'll start tying on your glittered tags with the Halloween ribbon you've cut along with the printable tags.

When everything is tied on and your happy with the spacing it's time to hang! I had the wreath hangers that I'd made earlier to hang my garland with.

Have fun displaying your new Halloween decor and have a wonderfully crafty Fall season! :)

Fall Party

Aqua and Yellow Fall Tablescape

I've been loving looking at all of the gorgeous Fall tablescapes all over Pinterest and other blogs!! I dream of hosting a lovely party with a beautiful tablescape where everyone has a name card and uses a cloth napkin :) It's never happened yet but a girl can dream, right!?!

Anyhow, most of the pictures that I found although beautiful had your traditional Fall colors......orange, yellow, brown, cream.....so I decided to throw a little color in my Fall tablescape - namely my fave aqua and yellow!!

I love how the aqua blends so well with my newly painted chairs and how the yellow pops! I also moved my chevron striped bench that I recovered into the mix.

I'm sorta obsessed with white plates, serveware, and accessories {because one day I WILL have an all white kitchen! :} and collecting napkins, placemats and tableclothes for whatever reason.....I never host fancy parties but I do seem to use them occasionally for casual get togethers. So everything pictured is something I already had!

I also shopped my home for the aqua accessories........AND I did throw in some traditional Fall colors :) I think it works, do you?

The placemats are simply 12 x 12 pieces of patterned paper. I used my Silhouette to make the favor boxes and pear place cards.

Have a wonderful Fall season decorating for your get togethers be it fancy or casual or something in between! And don't be afraid to add a little color!!
